19th Asian Athletics Championships

Kobe, 10 July 2011

The 19th Asian Athletics championships have concluded with a grand ceremony at Kobe Universiade Memorial Stadium here on Sunday evening.

India ended its campaign with one silver and two bronze medals on the last day of the above championship by taking its total to 11 (1 gold, 2 silver and 8 bronze medals) in the four-day meet, which is almost equaled its performance in the last edition held at Guangzhou two years ago (1G, 3S, 7B).

Tintu

Earlier the nation’s top women half-miler Tintu Luka, tipped to clash for the 800m title crown with Margarita Matsko of Kazakhstan, finished third in 2:02.55.  Matsko, the Asian Games victor in this event, also lost the battle to Vietnamese Truong Thanh Hang 2:01.41 to 2:02.46.   Tintu thus kept her bronze medal status from Guangzhou Asiad.

The men’s 800m saw another Asian Games winner, Sajad Moradi of Iran, losing the top spot to Mohamed Al-Azimi of Kuwait.  The Kuwaiti got a ‘golden double’ adding the 800m title to his earlier win in 1500m.  In a closely contested race Al-Azimi clocked 1:46.14, the Iranian 1:46.35 while a re-emerging Indian Ghamanda Ram got the bronze in 1:46.46, missing an Olympic berth by just 0.16 secs.    The second Indian runner in this event, Sajeesh Joseph, finished fifth 1:48.56.

Mayookha improved her national mark in triple jump for bronze and world championship berth

Kobe, Japan – 9 July 2011

Mayookha

Mayookha Johny was once again on the limelight.  After her incredible gold winning show on the first day in long jump, Mayookha added a bronze medal to her kitty in triple jump with a brilliant 14.11m national record on the 3rd day of Asian Athletics Championships here on Saturday.

Mayookha become the first Indian woman to breach the milestone 14m mark in triple jump when jumped to 14.02m during the Asian Grand Prix series held in China in May, this year. She added 1 cm to her national record in third round here by landing at 14.03m.  Afterwards she leapt to an excellent 14.11m in the next round, which assured her the bronze medal and a berth in World Championships to be held at Daegu, Korea, next month.   It was, however, just 3 cm short of the silver winning performance of Uzbek jumper Valeriya Kanatova (14.14m). China’s Xie Limei, Doha Asiad victor and Guangzhou Asian Games silver medallist, took the top spot with a season’s best 14.54m.

Joseph Abraham, last year’s Asian Games gold medallist, was not in good shape today and thus finished fourth in 400m hurdles by clocking a moderate 50.89 secs.   His teammate and Inter-State champion Satinder Singh was sixth in much slower 51.93 secs.  Japanese duo of Takatoshi Abe (49.64) and Yuta Imazeki (50.22) were 1-2, while Chieh Chen of Taipei completes the podium in 50.39s.

O P Jaisha

Metric miler O.P. Jaisha brought another bronze for India as she finished third in women’s 1500m with a time of 4:21.41 behind Bahrain’s Genzeb Shumi Regaza (4:15.91) and Vietnamese Truong Thanh Hang (4:18.40).    Kuwaiti Mohammad Al-Azemi took the honours in the men’s race in 3:42.49 ahead of fancied Iranian Sajjad Moradi (3:43.30).

Our 400m hurdlers Satinder Singh (50.95s) and Joseph G. Abraham (50.94s) have qualified for the finals after finished third in their respective qualifying heats

Mayookha ccomplished her dream with a Golden Leap

Mayookha Johny gave India her first gold on the opening day of 19th Asian Athletics Championships here this evening.    Mayookha, the 22-year-old athlete from Kerala and employed with the ONGC, leapt 6.56m in women’s long jump to achieve this honour.   In spite of two excellent marks at home – 6.64m for her Asian All-Star meet win in New Delhi last year and another 6.63m jump to win the National Inter-State championship at Bangalore last month – she was just a shade away from the World championship qualification mark of 6.65m.  But today’s win in Kobe ensured her a berth in the next month’s global meet at Daegu as all Area champions are getting an automatic entry in the Worlds.

Today Mayookha started her campaign with a humble 6.34m on her first jump and improved it to 6.56m on her next try, which eventually turned out to be the best of the day among the 14 contestants.  China’s Lu Minjia edged Saeko Okayama of Japan 6.52 to 6.51 to grab the silver.  The second Indian jumper on the scene, M.A. Prajusha, finished sixth with a jump measured to 6.27m.

Preeja

In the women’s 10000m, Asian Games gold medallist Preeja Sreedharan ended her campaign with a bronze medal behind two Bahraini athletes Shitaye Eshete and Kareema Jasim Saleh in spite of registering her season’s best time of 33:15.55.  Eshete, who finished third behind the Indian duo of Preeja and Kavita in Guangzhou Asiad, made a strong finish today with 32:47.80 for the top spot.  Kareema was second at 32:50.70 while Kavita Raut was a disappointing sixth clocking 35:24.35.  At Guangzhou both Preeja (31:50.47) and Kavita (31:51.44) clocked incredible timings for the top two placings.

Mayookha Johny became the first Indian woman to break through the 14-metre barrier in triple jump as the Asian GP series concluded in Wujiang, China on Sunday.

The third leg of the circuit saw a better performance by the Indians, with bronze medals coming from Mayookha and Sajeesh Joseph (800m).

Mayookha's National record that looked like coming the way she started the Asian GP series with two efforts of 13.71 metres, without a medal, in the last two legs, came on her last attempt. That measured 14.02 metres. She had opened with a 13.97m, to better M.A. Prajusha's National record of 13.72m, but fouled her next four attempts before crossing the 14m mark.
Mayookha, an ONGC employee, who had a disappointing season last year after improving Anju George’s national record in triple jump by just 1 cm during the national inter-state championship at Patiala, since lost the record to her Kerala state-mate M.A. Prajusha at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.   She had two identical 13.71m jumps, which was 1 cm short of Prajusha’s best, in the first two legs of the Asian Grand Prix at Jiaxing and Kunshan while finished fourth and fifth respectively.
On Sunday, she was still behind two Chinese. Xie Limei took the gold at 14.16 while Li Yanmei had the silver at 14.05, her opening jump.

Mayookha finishes 9th in women's Long Jump

The Asian champion miserably missed a god-given opportunity to win a global medal.  Yes, a medal was well within her reach until the customary three trials were over.

Everyone wondered what went wrong when she started with a not so great 6.37m jump and went down with marks of 6.31m and 6.26m on her next two try-outs.  Her first jump placed her ninth after the third round and thus she missed entering the top-eight as well as denied three further jumps which could have brought her a medal.  American Janay DeLoach made it to final as an eighth placer with her 6.39m effort and went on to improve it to sixth with her last round 6.56m.

    Day 4, 14th June 2011

    Victorious Kerala Senior Team

    Kerala become overall champions
Kerala become overall champions in the National Senior Inter-State Athletics Championships which concluded at Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Tuesday evening.   Kerala State also won the men’s and women’s team title and garnered a total 13 gold, 7 silver and an equal number of bronze medals for the overall honours.

    Tintu made a glorious return
The country’s leading middle distance runner Tintu Luka returns to track on a big stage after a lay-off of eight months.   Naturally everyone anticipated a good race from her and she did not disappoint the audience.  In her usual style she led the race right from the beginning and clocked a moderate 2:05.32 at the end.  State-mate S.R. Bindu made it a 1-2 for Kerala, exactly five seconds later.

    Tintu Luka

Kerala got another gold medal in this event through Sajeesh Joseph as he prevents Ghamanda Ram taking a double in the men’s race.  The Rajasthan runner recently garnered three silver medals in the Asian Grand Prix series in China and hence a pre-race favourite to win the event. However he was a wee bit earlier shown the victory sign and thus lost to Sajeesh at the post. Sajeesh won the event in 1:47.34, three-hundredths of a second faster than that of Ghamanda Ram. Sajeesh Joseph  adjudged the “best athlete” among men.   The honour in women’s division also went to another Keralite--long jumper Mayookha Johny.

Sajeesh Joseph, Adjudged best male athlete of the Championship and gold medalist in 800m for men

    Prajusha and Remya win gold
Prajusha cleared a distance of 13.53m to clinch the gold for Kerala. Mayookha kept away from competition due to personal reasons which took away the expected fierce completion between the two. Amitha Babuy took the bronze with a leap of 12.61m.

    Prajusha M A

    Remya R

At the pole vault event for women, campers R. Remya of Kerala and Karnataka's Khyati Vakharia finished at the same height of 3.40 metres and finished in that order.
Khyati, who was a sure bet for gold for the host, having achieved a personal best of 3.65 metres at the Ranchi Games, wept after the disappointing silver finish.
Preeja suffered a setback in the 5000m when her training partner over took her at the last 40 meter stretch of home straight  Surya of Tamilnadu hit the front right from the start and maintained it till the final straight when both Kavita and Preeja stepped on the gas, a wee bit too late, one thought. Kavita had it in her while Preeja was just not there for the final kick, with Surya holding out for the silver.

Mayookha bettered meet mark in long jump

Mayookha Johny, who recently become the first Indian woman to cross the 14m mark in triple jump, was back in action at the long jump pit.  Her state-mate from Kerala, M.A. Prajusha, add colour to the contest as the duo promised to provide an exciting contest from the beginning. Mayookha, who had an incredible 6.64m while winning last year’s Asian All-Stars Athletics Meet at New Delhi, was trying to attain the World championship qualifying norm of 6.65m here.  She started her campaign with a 6.63m opening jump, which eventually bettered Anju Bobby George’s five year old meet mark by 10 cm, and fetch her gold medal today. Compatriot Prajusha was second with 6.47m while Delhi’s Shalu Chaudhry took the bronze in 6.24m.

"memories of not winning a major medal last season” Mayookha told after the event.  She was sixth at the Commonwealth Games and seventh in the Asian Games last year.  It was the second time she missed the World’s qualifying mark in long jump, but optimistic about making it at the Asian championship in Kobe, next month. Mayookha is going for a double as she takes part in triple jump on Monday.

    A sweat revenge for Preeja
In yet another exciting contest, Preeja Sreedharan pips training partner Kavita Raut from Maharashtra in the 10,000m for women.  The Kerala girl avenged her defeat to Kavita at the national games.  Kavita had a golden double at Ranchi.  Preeja is the national record holder in both 5000 and 10000m run.  She clocked 34:33.48 for the evening’s win while Kavita was just 0.16 secs slower for the silver medal.  Tamil Nadu runner Surya Loganathan was a distant third in 35:27.18.

Lleading Kerala thrower Anitha Abraham heaved the hammer to a distance of 54.88m to fetch her a silver medal. Rajasthan’s Manju Bala won the gold with a 55.94m throw.

Bimin K P bagged the third gold for Kerala. He cleared 4.95 m to in pole vault for men for his gold. Bineesh Jacob won the bronze medal with a clearance of 4.70m in the same event
